Introduction to Batik (With Natural Dye Extracts) with Susan D’souza

This workshop provides an introduction to the wax resist technique of batik. You will be shown examples followed by demonstration and practice with a range of tools and different methods for applying the hot wax to both papers and cotton fabric. Exploring a range of natural dye extracts and cold water Procion dyes we will hand paint to apply colour. Images and materials from the gardens will be selected and provided as inspiration for strong contrasts and patter, to support successful batik design ideas.

You will produce a range of experimental samples on paper and fabric for sketchbooks, or to frame as small cards / artwork.

No previous textile painting or batik experience is necessary this is a relaxed and creative textile workshop. Those with more experience are welcome to use the session to develop and extend their own ideas and learn new approaches with tutorial guidance.

Susan is a textile artist and teacher, currently course leader for the BA (Hons) Textile Design Degree at Northbrook College. Susan exhibits and sells textile artwork with a focus on seasonal shifts in colour and nature including recent works with natural dyeing. Susan is a member of Pure Arts Group, Ditchling Museum Natural Dye Group and The Batik Guild.
