Rag Rugs, a Heritage Craft- with Debbie Siniska

This age old thrift craft has survived the test of time, and is still relevant today.
Come and learn to use old fashioned hand tools and techniques to create a hooky or proggy piece of textile art, as a little cushion or seat mat..

Please bring pre loved stretch knits, that you’re ready to recycle, (teeshirts, fine knit woollies, pj’s, cotton shirts etc…) there will be a class rag bag for students to use as well. We will be
working onto a hessian backing ~ new hand tools and hessian can be bought at the end of the session, if desired.

Cost £70 please contact Debbie to book your place .

Debbie Siniska ~ textile artist, maker, author and teacher

I am a rag rug maker and feltmaker, and have had my work exhibited in the V&A museum, I was commissioned by Tate Britain to create eight Bloomsbury style rag rugs, to coincide with an important exhibition of Bloomsbury art, and also by Charleston, bohemian home of the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and meeting place of the literary and art group of the 1920’s the Bloomsbury set, when I created a facsimile of an old Bloomsbury style rug, that now lies in John Maynard Keynes bedroom at Charleston, which is open to the public.

I appeared on channel 4 TV on Kirstie’s Homemade Home, along with Kirstie Allsopp, and published my book *Rag Rugs Old into New* to coincide with the screening ~ my work has been featured in the Times and Telegraph national newspapers, and many how-to craft books.

I teach at West Dean College of Art ans Restoration, and ran my ‘Eco Art’ after school sessions in 12 primary schools in Kent and East Sussex ~ I was televised by BBC South East.

My work has sold to celebrities, and in Australia, Ireland and Italy.

I work to commission from my studio in East Sussex, and supply a small number of galleries with my work.

I will run a pop- up workshop, if you have a venue..
