This workshop provides an introduction to the wax resist technique of batik. You will be shown examples followed by demonstration and practice with a range of tools and different methods for applying the hot wax to both papers and cotton fabric. Exploring a range of natural dye extracts and cold water Procion dyes we will hand paint to apply colour. Images and materials from the gardens will be selected and provided as inspiration for strong contrasts and patter, to support successful batik design ideas.
An accessible and friendly 2.5 hour class designed to explore mobilisation, stretching, strength, balance and breathwork amidst the expansive and calming Prairie Gardens. Beginner friendly with adaptations for people with issues with backs, knees, wrists, shoulders, balance and more. No scary pretzel shapes and you always have an option to relax if you prefer not to do a pose. Designed for all ages, body types and abilities.
This workshop involves creating a series of small textile landscape ideas based on images photographed in the gardens on the day, or a favourite landscape image. We will cover selection of materials, working with a palette of colour, designing for textiles, applique and simple hand stitch as mark making. The pieces created can be recorded as sketchbook samples, or framed as small textile cards or artworks.

This 2 day workshop provides the opportunity to explore creative batik (a wax resist technique). You will experiment with a range of tools and methods for applying the hot wax to paper, cotton and silk fabrics. Colour will then be hand painted with natural plant based dye extracts or dipped in a dye pot. Use plants from the garden or your own images to inspire pattern and texture that will work successfully in your batiks.
This workshop introduces you to a range of natural dyes and inks that can be used for hand painting and drawing. We will explore with demonstrations and recipie sheets how to make one fabric paint from natural dye extract and how to make one botanical ink. A bigger range of pre-made inks and dyes will be available to test and you will learn how to modify these to achieve an even greater range of tones and shades. Paper / fabrics will be provided to make either a colour chart or a small sample book.
