Sussex Prairie Garden is open until 13th October 2024. Our opening days and hours are Wednesday to Sunday - opening hours 1pm until 5pm . Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays . Dogs are welcome.
What is our aim?
To capture the sculptural qualities of the gardens in large scale drawings.
What will we be doing?
We’ll start with a guided exploration of the garden, identifying and sketching the natural and man-made sculptural forms. We’ll return to the studio to explore the materials and techniques needed to make big, brave drawings. I like to keep materials simple using a ‘less is more’ approach. Graphite, charcoal and ink form the core of my own practice. We’ll develop and refine drawings to a successful realisation of your observations and ideas. All drawings can be taken home at the end of the session.
Q: Do I need to be good at drawing?
No. Success in this workshop will depend on your ability to look, learn, be brave and enjoy yourself.

Short Biography – Rob Le Grice
I grew up on a farm near Penzance, Cornwall. As a young boy I spent hours walking across the fields, cliffs and beaches of West Penwith. The brutality of the granite coastline, the turbulent seas and the shifting sands left their mark on me when I left home to study, travelled to far-off places and made a successful career teaching Art.
At school, I was fortunate to have the art communities of St. Ives, Newlyn and Penzance to inspire me. In 1986 I attended Falmouth School of Art, and that’s where my passion for printmaking and drawing was founded. I completed my BA in Fine Art (Printmaking) at Loughborough College of Art & Design between 1987 and 1990. For three years many etching plates, lithography stones and woodblocks took a battering as I subjected them to some rigorous drawing practice. I became an Art teacher in 1991. I have worked in a variety of schools in the U.K., The Sultanate of Oman and most recently Singapore. I now live near Brighton in West Sussex.
Recently I have been working on large drawings that I call Objectscapes. These aim to represent my experiences of specific locations. Initially, I make small studies of the landscape, e.g. perched on a rock buffeted by the wind and rain. I also take time to collect bits-and-pieces found on the floor – stones, seaweed, driftwood – and take them all home to the studio. My drawing process responds to my memories, the landscape studies and close observations of the objects. The works evolve with no pre-determined outcome. I carefully select materials and techniques that compliment the subject matter, often combining the reliable with the unpredictable e.g. graphite and turpentine.
