YELLOW MINNOW SKETCH by Maggie E Smith
I am an artist currently living in rural East Sussex, specialising in botanical portraiture.
I love to draw outside in my Sussex garden and in the local countryside, and am equally fascinated in the over looked so called weeds and wild flowers and plants of meadows, verges and woodlands, as the more stately blooms and love to depict the seasonal change of British Flora.I love the meditative process of drawing with a fine liner pen often with a continuous line approach, sometimes leaving the drawing as purely linear drawings, but equally I have always had a passion for colour, coming from my other life as a knitwear designer, and love the process of layering colour using acrylic ink.
I hope to capture the spirit of my botanical subjects in a fluid and energetic manner, full of colour and optimism. In the last year I have had work exhibited in the Royal Watercolour Society Open, Folkestone Gallery Spring and Winter Shows , The Sussex Contemporary, was in two group shows at Yardstick Gallery, Leamington Spa, ‘Draw Me Drawing’ and ‘Trug – A Growing Inspiration’.
I will be showing framed and unframed original paintings , printed table linen and a few limited edition prints.

Autumn seedheads have proved compelling both as natural forms and raw material for natural art brush and mark making. Spring plant growth has yielded inspiring underlying structure through leaf rubbings and early summer flora is transferred through a botanical contact print process onto cloth.
