Course fee £150 including all materials and coffee, tea, biscuits will be provided free of charge this year. Cake will still be available in the café and you may wish to bring a sandwich or similar for lunch.
What to expect on the day?
Join me for 2 days to learn about fabric and hand stitch techniques in a relaxed yet productive environment. You will make a series of abstract fabric arrangements that encourage a complete focus on manipulating the visual elements shape, colour, texture, tone, line, pattern. Awareness of aesthetic choices and decisions will be developed when balancing and finalising your compositions/arrangements. This is a contemplative, and challenging activity that is enlightening when you finalise your sample arrangements. Free and experimental approaches in hand stitching will be supported by some traditional skills. The joy of a simple running stitch will be revealing and fun to explore. An introduction to Kantha, Sashiko and Boro stitch will support your broader understanding of how other cultures create new works from repurposed fabrics. You will build up a variety of experimental ideas about how to embellish your fabric collages. As you take your stitches for a gentle walk an intuitive design will gradually evolve. You can expect to set up and start 3-5 collages, unfinished works you can complete at home, on the train, on holiday or wherever else you feel like finishing them.
What to bring with you?
You are welcome to bring your own fabrics and sewing kit if you have a special stash that you would like to work with. The fabrics I bring to this course are mostly repurposed fabrics. There is a good range to select from. Please bring a folder or bag to transport your collages.
