Embroidered by women from across the globe!
The award-winning collaborative research project Domestic Dusters is a community-facing initiative inviting women worldwide to embroider their domestic experiences onto yellow dusters. Founded by Principal Lecturer Vanessa Marr from the University of Brighton in 2015, it aims to make women’s domestic labour visible and give them a voice where they are silenced, unheard, or ignored.
Dusters were selected as a metaphor for domesticity because they are invisibly mundane, yet soft and visually appealing. Their transformation through embroidery is a clever, unusual, and subversive act that takes time, care, and attention, binding the frustration of their maker’s predicament into every hand-sewn stitch.
The dusters on display in our gallery space represent a selection from the hundreds held in the main collection.
