Lucy Dean was one of the artists exhibiting in the Prairie Gardens Gallery in the UNFURL exhibition last year. She is currently running a series of “Doodle to Design” mini courses at Printers Playhouse in Eastbourne, themes have included Alice in wonderland, Architecture, Insects and plants.
The Doodle to Design courses have evolved in response to how Lucy develops her own artwork. She has amassed a fine collection of doodles, or “automatic” drawings, into a concertina sketchbook. Many of these drawings were created in meetings, where the action of doodling helped to keep attention on the business at hand. Having collated the drawings together Lucy realised that she had created a visual reference book from which she could find inspiration to work from. This then became the starting point for a body of work of 13 A3 illustrations themed around the rabbit hole that was the Covid pandemic, a cancelled theatre set design project for a modern take on Alice in Wonderland turned into a visual record of her family’s experiences during Covid.
The workshop in August at the Prairie Gardens will have a nature inspired theme and will draw on the fabulous plants and insects that you can find at the gardens. We will use traditional doodling techniques and materials initially but then evolve these further into images with intent by using different materials that elevate the doodles into designs. This is a fun workshop that can lead to some fabulous, unexpected results.
The workshop is suitable is suitable for all abilities.
It will take place in the gallery surrounded by inspiring artwork indoors and also in the glorious gardens outside.
Materials for the workshop will be provided but you can also bring with you any drawing implements you like to work with and favoured sketchbooks, including any backs of envelopes or meeting agendas that you have absently doodled over and kept!

Cost per person £65 includes materials and tea, coffee and biscuits. Price also includes entry into the Prairie gardens, you can stay as long as you like after the workshop. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy the gardens.
